Cavity of ventricle at a glance
- What it is
- The cavity of the ventricle is the blood-filled chamber of the right or left ventricle.
- Location
- The right ventricle receives blood through the tricuspid valve and ejects it through the pulmonary valve. The left ventricle receives blood through the mitral valve and ejects it through the aortic valve. Both walls bear trabeculae carneae and papillary muscles.
- Function
- The ventricles are the main pumping chambers; the right drives blood to the lungs, the left to the body.
- Body system
- Cardiovascular · paired (left and right)
- FMA ID
- FMA9466 (Foundational Model of Anatomy)
Key facts
- The left ventricular wall is about three times thicker than the right.
- The right ventricle is crescent-shaped in cross-section and has a smooth outflow part (conus arteriosus); the left is conical and almost circular in section.
- The two ventricles eject the same volume with each beat, about 70 mL at rest.
