Septal leaflet of tricuspid valve at a glance
- What it is
- One of the three leaflets of the tricuspid valve, attached to the interventricular septum.
- Location
- It lies along the interventricular septum and is anchored by chordae directly to the septum and to small septal papillary muscles.
- Function
- It closes with the other leaflets to prevent backflow into the right atrium.
- Body system
- Cardiovascular · single, midline structure
- FMA ID
- FMA7240 (Foundational Model of Anatomy)
Key facts
- It is closely related to the atrioventricular node.
- It attaches slightly lower (more toward the apex) than the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve, which helps identify the right side on heart scans.
Clinical relevance
In Ebstein anomaly the septal and posterior leaflets are displaced down toward the apex.
