Lateral head of flexor hallucis brevis at a glance
- What it is
- The lateral part of flexor hallucis brevis in the sole.
- Location
- Origin: flexor hallucis brevis as a whole arises from the plantar surfaces of the cuboid and lateral cuneiform and the tibialis posterior tendon. Insertion: lateral side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the great toe, with adductor hallucis, through the lateral sesamoid bone.
- Function
- Flexes the great toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint.
- Body system
- Muscular · paired (left and right)
- FMA ID
- FMA45973 (Foundational Model of Anatomy)
Key facts
- Innervation: medial plantar nerve (S2–S3)
- The two heads are defined by their insertions; each tendon contains a sesamoid bone under the head of the first metatarsal.
- Lies in the third layer of the sole.
