Thyrohyoid at a glance
- What it is
- A short infrahyoid muscle continuing upward from sternothyroid.
- Location
- Originates from the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage and inserts onto the greater horn and body of the hyoid bone.
- Function
- Depresses the hyoid bone, or raises the larynx when the hyoid is fixed.
- Body system
- Respiratory · paired (left and right)
- FMA ID
- FMA13353 (Foundational Model of Anatomy)
Key facts
- Innervation: fibers of C1 traveling with the hypoglossal nerve
- Its nerve (C1 fibres) leaves the hypoglossal nerve near the greater horn of the hyoid.
- The internal laryngeal nerve and superior laryngeal artery pierce the thyrohyoid membrane deep to it.
