Transverse head of adductor hallucis at a glance
- What it is
- The transverse part of adductor hallucis in the sole.
- Location
- Originates from the plantar ligaments of the lateral metatarsophalangeal joints and deep transverse metatarsal ligament, and inserts onto the lateral side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the great toe.
- Function
- Adducts the great toe and helps maintain the transverse arch of the foot.
- Body system
- Muscular · paired (left and right)
- FMA ID
- FMA46020 (Foundational Model of Anatomy)
Key facts
- Innervation: deep branch of the lateral plantar nerve (S2–S3)
- Lies in the third layer of the sole; it pulls the metatarsal heads together and joins the oblique head on the lateral sesamoid.
