First plantar interosseous of foot at a glance
- What it is
- A small muscle between the metatarsals on the sole of the foot.
- Location
- Origin: medial side of the base of the 3rd metatarsal. Insertion: medial side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the 3rd toe.
- Function
- Adducts the 3rd toe toward the 2nd toe and flexes the metatarsophalangeal joint.
- Body system
- Muscular · paired (left and right)
- FMA ID
- FMA37745 (Foundational Model of Anatomy)
Key facts
- Innervation: lateral plantar nerve
- The three plantar interossei lie in the fourth (deepest) layer of the sole and are unipennate.
- Plantar interossei adduct toward the second toe (PAD); dorsal interossei abduct (DAB).
