Best anatomy apps compared: free, paid, AR and AI options

By · Last reviewed

The best anatomy app depends on your budget, your device and what you need to learn. In a 2026 study that scored the free versions of 20 iOS anatomy apps for learning value, BioDigital Human, TeachMeAnatomy and Anatomyka scored highest, while paid 3D atlases such as Complete Anatomy and Visible Body add augmented reality (AR).

We compared 13 anatomy learning apps and web tools, including our own, using each developer's App Store listing, Google Play listing or website as listed on 30 October 2026. The table is in alphabetical order, not a ranking. Where a listing does not mention a feature, the table says "Not stated" instead of guessing.

Disclosure: EasyAnatomyLab is our own free web tool, and it appears in the table below. No app paid to be included, and this page has no affiliate links (see the advertising policy).

What is the best anatomy app?

There is no single best anatomy app for everyone. In a 2026 study that rated the free versions of 20 iOS anatomy apps with a learning rubric called MARuL, BioDigital Human, TeachMeAnatomy and Anatomyka tied for the top score of 71.5 out of 104. The study did not test paid features, so the best choice depends on what you need: (Reshad HZM, Zaini S, Yusof NA. Content analysis of human anatomy mobile apps for undergraduate student learning using MARuL. Med Sci Educ. 2026.)

Anatomy apps compared: price, platforms and features

The table compares 13 anatomy apps and web tools on platform, free option, price, 3D models, quizzes, offline use and AR or VR. Every cell comes from the developer's own store listing or website, opened on 30 October 2026. Prices are US App Store prices in US dollars unless marked; Kenhub lists euros, and Easy Anatomy 3D's listing says its price may vary by location. (Easy Anatomy 3D with Voice AI, App Store (US) listing.)

"Not stated" means the listing or website we opened did not mention the feature. The app may still have it, so check the developer's help pages before you rely on it. We left out store star ratings, which change daily, and apps whose official pages we could not open.

What is the best free anatomy app?

Free options include BioDigital Human's Personal plan and the free tiers of Kenhub and TeachMeAnatomy. BioDigital's free plan covers its anatomy and physiology library, including tours and quizzes, but allows 10 model views a month and 5 saved models. Kenhub's free account opens its atlas, articles and sample videos and quizzes. (BioDigital Help Center: What subscriptions do you offer?.)

Anatomyka, one of the three top scorers in the MARuL study, gives its skeletal system (more than 4,500 landmarks), general anatomy and body regions free, with a 3-day trial that unlocks all body systems. (Anatomyka, App Store (US) listing.)

Free to download is not the same as free to use. Complete Anatomy offers a 3-day free trial before an annual licence, Easy Anatomy 3D offers a 3-day trial on its weekly plan, and Zygote Body gives a 7-day trial of its paid tiers while keeping a $0 Lite tier. IMAIOS e-Anatomy lets you preview more than 26,000 images before you subscribe. (Complete Anatomy for iPhone, App Store (US) listing.)

Check the developer's own pages as well as the store listing. BioDigital's App Store text still offers a $19.99-a-year Personal Plus upgrade, but BioDigital's help centre says that plan and all paid individual plans were retired on 1 May 2026, leaving the free Personal plan for individual learners. BioDigital has since cut its free plan back to its anatomy and physiology library. (BioDigital Help Center: May 2026: Changes to Individual Plans and Free Trials.)

The free version of a paid app can look weaker than the full product. In the 2026 MARuL review, the free version of Complete Anatomy scored 48 out of 104, and the authors noted that it lacked interactive features such as quizzes. The study left out paid apps entirely, so its scores say nothing about paid tiers. (Reshad HZM, Zaini S, Yusof NA. Content analysis of human anatomy mobile apps for undergraduate student learning using MARuL. Med Sci Educ. 2026.)

Anatomy AR apps: which ones have augmented reality?

An anatomy AR app shows a 3D model of the body through your phone or tablet camera, so it appears to stand in your room. Complete Anatomy, Visible Body's Human Anatomy Atlas 2027 and Visible Body Suite, and VOKA 3D Anatomy and Physiology all list an AR mode on their App Store pages. (Complete Anatomy for iPhone, App Store (US) listing.)

Headset-based mixed reality is aimed at teachers and their classes. HoloAnatomy, created at Case Western Reserve University and now offered by AlensiaXR, is 3D mixed-reality software shown in use on a HoloLens 2 headset. HoloHuman+ from GIGXR is a free download but needs a subscription arranged through GIGXR's sales team. (Case Western Reserve University: HoloAnatomy.)

Many App Store listings include a line such as "Apple Vision: Requires visionOS 1.0 or later". That line means the app runs on Apple Vision Pro; it does not say the app has AR or VR features, so the table marks AR only where the developer's own text says so. (TeachMe Anatomy: 3D Human Body, App Store (US) listing.)

Does AR help you learn anatomy? The evidence so far says not on its own. A 2021 meta-analysis of 5 studies with 508 participants found no significant difference in anatomy test scores between AR and control groups, and a 2024 meta-analysis of 24 randomised controlled trials of VR and AR also found no significant effect of AR on knowledge scores (SMD -0.02). (Bölek KA, De Jong G, Henssen D. The effectiveness of the use of augmented reality in anatomy education: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Sci Rep. 2021.)

Virtual reality (VR) looks more promising. The 2024 meta-analysis found a moderate effect of VR on knowledge scores (standardised mean difference 0.58), close to the 0.53 reported by a 2020 meta-analysis of 15 trials, which counted 3D models on computer or mobile screens as well as headsets as VR. A third 2024 review, which pooled AR with immersive VR, found an overall gain of 0.40, rising to 0.52 when the tools were used to supplement other teaching. (Salimi S et al. Efficacy of virtual reality and augmented reality in anatomy education: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Anat Sci Educ. 2024.)

What is the best AI for anatomy?

No study has yet compared the AI features built into anatomy apps, so there is no proven best AI for anatomy. General chatbots can help you quiz yourself, but they make mistakes: in a 2025 study, ChatGPT 4o mini scored 76.15% and Gemini 72.84% on anatomy curriculum questions marked against an expert answer key, and both gave factually wrong answers. (Ganapathy A, Kaushal P. Cognitive domain assessment of artificial intelligence chatbots: ChatGPT and Gemini in anatomy education. Med Sci Educ. 2025.)

Among the apps we checked, Easy Anatomy 3D with Voice AI is the one whose listing describes a built-in AI tutor. Its App Store text says you can ask questions out loud and the AI answers by voice while it highlights structures on the 3D model, builds study plans and runs quick quizzes. Tutor time is sold separately as in-app purchases, from $3.99 for 10 minutes. (Easy Anatomy 3D with Voice AI, App Store (US) listing.)

The other listings in the table did not describe AI features when we checked. That does not prove an app has none, so look at the developer's own news or help pages if an AI tool matters to you.

Kenhub's guide to studying with AI suggests general tools such as NotebookLM and ChatGPT, but warns that ChatGPT "makes mistakes, and sometimes significant ones" and still cannot create anatomically accurate images. It advises cross-checking AI answers against expert-reviewed resources. (Kenhub: Master anatomy with AI: your ultimate study partner (J. Cottle; last reviewed 18 November 2024).)

Research points the same way. A 2023 study found that ChatGPT and Google Bard wrote multiple-choice anatomy questions with a high degree of accuracy, but warned that such models "can sometimes generate inaccurate or misleading information" and that their output needs careful checking. (Ilgaz HB, Çelik Z. The significance of artificial intelligence platforms in anatomy education: an experience with ChatGPT and Google Bard. Cureus. 2023.)

AI is also unreliable at summarising research. In a 2025 test, ChatGPT summarised anatomy-education studies accurately 60%, 20% and 0% of the time as the search questions became more specific. (Chytas D et al. Can artificial intelligence accurately detect and summarize anatomy education literature? Morphologie. 2025.)

  1. Quiz, then check: Ask an AI to quiz you on a topic you have already studied, then check each answer in your textbook or atlas.
  2. Explain, do not add: Ask for a simpler explanation of something you have read, not for new facts you cannot check.
  3. Distrust AI pictures: AI image tools still cannot draw anatomically accurate images, so learn from labelled diagrams instead. (Kenhub: Master anatomy with AI: your ultimate study partner (J. Cottle; last reviewed 18 November 2024).)

To check an answer against a labelled model with cited sources, open our 3D human anatomy guides.

How to choose an anatomy app

Researchers who review anatomy apps judge them on what they teach, not only on how they look. The MARS rubric, used in a 2025 review of free Google Play anatomy apps, rates the accuracy of the information, its credibility and its scientific evidence base. Use the same questions when you choose: (Rivera García GE et al. Reviewing mobile apps for teaching human anatomy: search and quality evaluation study. JMIR Med Educ. 2025.)

  1. Check accuracy and authorship: Look for named authors or reviewers and a reference list. Errors do happen: a 2024 comparison of six VR anatomy apps found the spinalis cervicis muscle described incorrectly in one of them. (Baek SW et al. Systematic analysis of anatomy virtual reality (VR) apps for advanced education and further applications. Sci Rep. 2024.)
  2. Match your course: A medical student needs nerves, vessels and muscle attachments; a school biology student may only need organs and body systems. If your course also tests anatomy on scans, look for labelled imaging as well as 3D models: IMAIOS e-Anatomy, for example, is an image atlas of labelled axial, coronal and sagittal scan series, radiographs and angiograms, aimed at radiologists, medical students and radiology technicians. Read the content list before you pay. (IMAIOS e-Anatomy, App Store (US) listing.)
  3. Make sure you can test yourself: Quizzes and flashcards help you remember. The 2026 MARuL review found that the free version of at least one app lacked interactive features such as quizzes. (Reshad HZM, Zaini S, Yusof NA. Content analysis of human anatomy mobile apps for undergraduate student learning using MARuL. Med Sci Educ. 2026.)
  4. Check your device: Read the compatibility section first. Easy Anatomy 3D, for example, requires iOS 26.0 or later, and only some apps say they work offline. (Easy Anatomy 3D with Voice AI, App Store (US) listing.)
  5. Prefer apps that are kept up to date: The 2025 MARS review left out apps that had not been updated for 2 or more years. Each store listing shows the date of the latest version. (Rivera García GE et al. Reviewing mobile apps for teaching human anatomy: search and quality evaluation study. JMIR Med Educ. 2025.)
  6. Try before you pay: Kenhub and TeachMeAnatomy both list a 7-day money-back guarantee, and several apps offer a free tier or a free trial. (Kenhub: pricing.)
  7. Use the app with other study: In a 2024 meta-analysis, AR and VR tools gave larger gains when they were used to supplement other teaching (SMD 0.52, against 0.40 overall). (García-Robles P et al. Immersive virtual reality and augmented reality in anatomy education: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Anat Sci Educ. 2024.)

For study methods that work with any app, see our anatomy and physiology guide.

Do anatomy apps help you learn?

3D tools seem to help a little. A 2015 meta-analysis of 36 studies with 2,226 participants found that 3D visualisation gave slightly higher factual knowledge (effect size d = 0.30) and better spatial knowledge (d = 0.50) than other ways of teaching anatomy. (Yammine K, Violato C. A meta-analysis of the educational effectiveness of three-dimensional visualization technologies in teaching anatomy. Anat Sci Educ. 2015.)

The apps themselves are rarely tested. The 2025 MARS review concluded that "the lack of scientific backing for these technological tools is evident", and the 2026 MARuL review found that apps scored best on usability, because most focused on looks, functions and ease of use. (Rivera García GE et al. Reviewing mobile apps for teaching human anatomy: search and quality evaluation study. JMIR Med Educ. 2025.)

We found no trial that compares named anatomy apps against each other on exam results. Treat any list of the best anatomy apps, including this one, as a guide to features and prices, and test an app against your own course before you commit to it.

Where EasyAnatomyLab fits

EasyAnatomyLab is our own site, so judge this part with that in mind. It is free to use in a web browser with no account. It has an interactive 3D human body, male or female, where you can click any of more than 1,000 structures, plus 3D animal anatomy, dissection guides and a free anatomy quiz with printable worksheets. (EasyAnatomyLab: 3D human anatomy.)

It has clear limits next to the paid atlases. There is no app-store app, no AR mode, no offline mode and no AI tutor. The human model is built mainly from the BodyParts3D dataset, with Human Reference Atlas parts for the female option and for a few other structures, such as the knee ligaments and menisci, and structures the model lacks are shown in 2D diagrams instead. (EasyAnatomyLab: 3D human anatomy.)

EasyAnatomyLab is not connected to Easy Anatomy 3D with Voice AI, which is published by EASY ANATOMY - FZCO. (Easy Anatomy 3D with Voice AI, App Store (US) listing.)

For dogs, cats, frogs and other animals, see animal anatomy in 3D.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free anatomy app?

For a fully free option, BioDigital Human's Personal plan gives its anatomy and physiology library, including tours and quizzes, but each model, tour or quiz you open counts toward a limit of 10 views a month. Kenhub and TeachMeAnatomy have free tiers, and Zygote Body Lite and EasyAnatomyLab (our own site) are free in a browser. In a 2026 study of free iOS apps, BioDigital Human, TeachMeAnatomy and Anatomyka scored highest for learning value.

Is there an anatomy app with AR?

Yes. Complete Anatomy, Visible Body's Human Anatomy Atlas 2027 and Visible Body Suite, and VOKA 3D Anatomy and Physiology all list an augmented reality mode that places a 3D model in your camera view. AR is a useful way to look at a model, but two meta-analyses found no significant gain in anatomy test scores from AR on its own.

What is the best AI for anatomy?

No study has compared AI anatomy tutors, so there is no proven best. Easy Anatomy 3D with Voice AI lists a voice tutor that controls its 3D atlas. General chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini scored about 73 to 76% on anatomy curriculum questions in a 2025 study and made factual errors, so check every AI answer against a textbook or atlas.

Is Complete Anatomy free?

Complete Anatomy is free to download and offers a 3-day free trial, which its website says needs no payment details. After that it is a paid subscription: the US App Store lists a Student License at $74.99, charged annually. Elsevier says the Student License has an introductory discount in the first year, after which the full price applies.

Is there an app like Duolingo for anatomy?

Several anatomy apps offer short daily practice with spaced repetition. Kenhub's free Daily Anatomy Flashcards app teaches the 500 most important anatomical structures with built-in spaced repetition. Easy Anatomy 3D lists a daily review with spaced repetition, and TeachMe Anatomy has flashcards with spaced repetition. Easy Anatomy 3D also keeps a daily study streak. Try one to see if it suits you.

Is an anatomy app worth paying for?

It can be, if you will use its quizzes and content often. In a 2026 review, the free version of Complete Anatomy lacked interactive features such as quizzes, which the authors gave as one possible reason for its low teaching and learning score. Try the free tier or trial first, check the content against your course, and look for a refund policy: Kenhub and TeachMeAnatomy both list a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Is there an app that teaches anatomy and physiology?

Yes. Visible Body Suite covers human anatomy and physiology, with 3D animations of processes such as gas exchange and muscle contraction, sold as a subscription. BioDigital Human's free Personal plan includes its anatomy and physiology library of more than 500 models, tours and quizzes. VOKA 3D Anatomy and Physiology also says it covers both.
